Climate Change Mitigation Opportunities Index 2017
Morgan Stanley’s Institute for Sustainable Investing, with The Economist Intelligence Unit, offers a report and analytical tool to help investors explore technologies that mitigate climate change. Five sectors, responsible for 90% of all greenhouse gas emissions, are analyzed across 20 countries.
ENERGY: Opportunities are greatest in emerging countries as they develop new capacity and build new infrastructure, while substitution of new for old technology is the focus in developed markets.
AGRICULTURE: AgTech investment has hit record highs. Beyond biofuels and seed genetics, it includes digital technologies that optimize resources and novel innovations like drones that track yield.
BUILT ENVIRONMENT: Heavily forested countries like Brazil are using technology to tackle deforestation, while rising global demand for “green buildings” provides investment opportunities in all markets.
TRANSPORT: Rising transport demand in emerging and developed markets alike, and shifting consumer preferences toward cleaner vehicles, are creating needs for new infrastructure.
INDUSTRY: Technology for carbon capture and storage is growing, as policymakers in emerging and advanced economies seek to decouple industrial production from rising emissions.
